The first step of Science is to know one thing from another. This knowledge consits in their specific distinctions; but in order that it may be fixed and permanent distinct names must be given to different things and those names must be recorded and remembered.
Carolus Linaeus[1707-1778]
A estes seguiram-se outros: Zurique (1560), Bolonha (1547), Leiden (1577), Leipzig (1579) Montpellier e Heidelberg (1594), Jardin des Plantes-Paris /1635) The Royal Botanical Garden of Edimburgh (1690), Capetown (1694), Mauritius /1735), Oxford (1621), Cambridge (1761), Chelsea Physic Garden (1673).
Segundo Lucille M. Brockway (1979) - the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew... served as a control centre which regulated the flow of botanical information from of the metropolis to the colonial satellites, and disseminated information emanating from them.".
1760 - American Philosophical Society
1768 - American Philosophical Society at Philadelphia
1805 - Charleston Botanical Society and Garden
1846 - Smithsonian Institution
1848 - American Association for the Advancement of Science
1854 - Société Zoologique d'Acclimatation (Paris)
1890) - Botanical Society of America
Assim a Royal Society edita desde 1665 "the Philosophical Transactions". Do outro lado do Atlântico tivemos desde 1818 o "American Journal of Science".
