O DIGITAL NAS BIBLIOTECAS E ARQUIVOS DO PRESENTE E DO FUTURO

A DEFINIÇÃO DA BIBLIOTECA DIGITAL.O digital parece dominar o nosso quotidiano. O final do século anuncia-se com o advento da era digital. No campo do conhecimento científico e da sua divulgação o digital é sinónimo de presente e futuro e de uma caminhada para a democratização do conhecimento. As bibliotecas e Arquivos, autênticas catedrais do conhecimento e memória histórica não ficaram imunes a este processo. Deste modo biblioteca é hoje sinónimo de Biblioteca Virtual, Biblioteca Digital ouBiblioteca sem Paredes. E, para aqueles pouco habituados a esta realidade, arriscamos aqui uma breve definição entre as muitas que os especialistas nos presenteiam: The concept of the virtual library, i.e., a library that provides access to electronic and print materials from many sources, both local and remote, has achieved a widespread popularity(2).

A partir daqui o livro, o documento e a imagem através do recurso ao hardware disponível transformam-se, quase que num acto de mágica, em objectos digitais. A biblioteca do futuro será dominada pelos bytes: In the digital library, information is stored as "digital objects". A primitive idea of a digital object is that it is just a set of bits, but this idea is too simple. The content of even the most basic digital object has some structure, and information, such as intellectual property rights, must be associated with the digital object(3). E não deverá esquecer-se que existe uma grande diferença entre aquilo que se guarda em suporte digital e o que chega ao utilizador. Tudo isto porque a disponibilização ao utente resulta de uma arquitectura própria de base dados e de uma rede servida de um interface de disponibilização. Assim, digital libraries must take into account a broader range of materials, technologies, and practices -- transient as well as permanent documents, fluid as well as fixed materials, paper as well as digital technologies, and collaborative as well as individual practices(4). Também the idea of the library includes the construction of a set of arrangements that overcomes the disparateness of the individual sources by relating them to one another in terms of a single, operational, intellectually structured whole(5).

Sendo este um campo pioneiro é natural que as questões técnicas que envolvem a digitalização, organização da informação, a forma de indexação através da base de dados ou meta data dominem o debate em torno das bibliotecas digitais. Deste modo as hodiernas bibliotecas apresentam uma complexidade que escapa ao utente: Digital libraries are organizations that provide the resources, including the specialized staff, to select, structure, offer intellectual access to, interpret, distribute, preserve the integrity of, and ensure the persistence over time of collections of digital works so that they are readily and economically available for use by a defined community or set of communities(6).

Hoje ninguém o nega que são evidentes as vantagens das bibliotecas digitais. Nisto estámos todos estão de acordo, mesmo os próprios técnicos dos arquivos e bibliotecas, por esse mundo fora estão rendidos aos desafios da era digital. E os resultados disto são evidentes para a instituição e utentes.

A Internet veio lembrar-nos que a informação é universal e o se acesso deve ser democratizado. É inegável que a Internet permitiu tudo isso e acessos fáceis e cómodos desde qualquer parte do mundo e nas 24 horas do dia. Por outro lado ao disponibilizarmos aos interessados a informação em formato digital é maior a possibilidade de salvaguarda das espécies originais, uma vez que o utilizador deixa de ter acesso ao original. Acrescem ainda outras vantagens. O utilizador dispõe da capacidade total de manipular a informação que lhe é fornecida sob a forma de imagem e texto. Certamente que o mais evidente benefício deverá ser o facto de a consulta dos originais ao ser feita por via remota aliviar os bibliotecários e arquivistas do serviço de apoio local ao investigador, restando-lhe mais tempo para se dedicar à tarefa de preservação e organização das espécies.

A CULTURA DIGITAL É UNIVERSAL E ASSOCIATIVA. A era digital para as bibliotecas é também a das redes e da rede das redes, isto é, a Internet ou outro sistema de redes globais. O estabelecimento de redes para circulação e partilha da informação é um dos aspectos definidores das bibliotecas digitais. Aqui a informação é universal e publica e a Internet nos últimos vinte anos veio atribuir-lhe a dimensão planetária.

A actualidade das bibliotecas digitais é evidente, pelo que nos últimos anos o tema tem sido um dos grandes motivos de preocupação dos responsáveis pelas bibliotecas nacionais e universitárias de diversos países. É de destacar o pioneirismo norte-americano na criação de consórcios e redes locais ou mundiais para financiar e gerir a distribuição da informação digital. Neste âmbito um conjunto de instituições e programas têm-se afirmado como promotores do debate sobre o futuro das bibliotecas e ao mesmo tempo que são aglutinadores de projectos e da definição da indispensável interligação e partilha. Com isto evita-se a anarquia e duplicação das tarefas de digitalização(7). Eis alguns destes consórcios que mais se tem evidenciado nos últimos anos:

BIBLIOTECA: DE ALEXANDRIA AO DIGITAL. Quando se fala de bibliotecas, na memória de todos paira quase sempre a ideia da milenar Biblioteca de Alexandria construída no século 4 AC(13) por iniciativa de Alexandre e que desapareceu com o avanço árabe no séc. VII. Foi na senda desta que em 1971 Michael Hart se decidiu, ainda na pré-história da Internet em que a rede se resumia apenas a 23 computadores, pela criação da pioneira biblioteca de Alexandria em formato digital. O primeiro trabalho de divulgação digital foi feito com a Declaração da Independência dos Estados Unidos. O projecto ganhou enorme sucesso nos USA e cedo se transformou numa pioneira iniciativa de afirmação da biblioteca digital. Assim, nos últimos anos o labor dos seus colaboradores levou à disponibilização de mais de 2000 títulos em diversas línguas, com predominância para o inglês [on-line HTML file: <url: http://www.gutenberg.net/>](14).

Também deverá notar-se que desde a década de setenta a marcha da Internet e das Bibliotecas Digitais foi imparável, levando à sua afirmação nopresente. Nos anos oitenta esta aposta era ainda incipiente. Primeiro foi a Universidade de Yale em 1983 com o pioneiro projecto de digitalização do núcleo de microfilmes, a que se seguiu em 1987 IBM-Andrew Wyeth Project que contempla a Biblioteca do Vaticano, Archivo General de Indias, Hebrew Union College e Yale Beinecke Library. Este mega projecto foi seguido de Perseus Project dedicado à literatura greco-romana e American Memory(1989) da Biblioteca do Congresso. Já a última década do século transformou-se na era do digital com o aparecimento dos grandes projectos que hoje corporizam as Bibliotecas Digitais. De entre estes deverá salientar-se os das universidades de Carnegie Mellon(1993), Columbia(1993),Yale(1994). Na verdade, hoje o digital deixou de ser um desafio para se transformar numa realidade.

Não deverá esquecer-se que o mundo das bibliotecas digitais tem nos meios universitários a sua principal aposta. As necessidades da pesquisa e ensino assim o promoveram. É de salientarThe Oxford Text Archive [on-lineHTML file:ota.ox.ac.uk/index2.html], que no presente alberga mais de 2500 títulos para uso restrito do mundo académico. Aqui ao contrário do Projecto Gutenberg é feita uma selecção criteriosa das edições dos textos a disponibilizar. Também as bibliotecas nacionais de diversos países entraram na corrida, sendo de destacar o pioneirismo das de França e do Congresso (USA). A isto somaram-se projectos de âmbito mundial como é o caso da Bibliotheca Universalis (BU), lançada em 1995 pelos sete países mais industrializados do mundo, a que se juntaram outros(15):

Neste final do século o desusado interesse pelo formato digital conduz a que a entrada no novo milénio seja de plena transformação das bibliotecas tradicionais. O número de textos disponibilizados pela via digital é já assinalável, o que evidencia que o projecto de Biblioteca Digital é já uma realidade de que muitos de nós podemos fruir. The Center for the Study of Digital Libraries (CSDL), criado em 1995 por The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, é um dos promotores das bibliotecas digitais não apenas no Estado de Texas onde está sedeada mas também em todos os Estados Unidos da América(16).

A preocupação por este domínio levou à criação de fundos especiais, de projectos específicos e mesmo de cursos especializados em Bibliotecas Digitais(17). Nos últimos anos foram criados vários fundos e programas de apoio, apostados em transformar o panorama das bibliotecas e da acessibilidade da informação:

Se num primeiro momento os projectos eram globalizantes e expressavam-se pelo carácter piloto, hoje parece que se atingiu a necessária maturidade e a aposta é na especialização. Neste caso a História é um dos campos que mais evoluiu. Nos últimos anos fomos confrontados com a criação de bibliotecas e bases de dados especializadas que permitem um melhor e rápido acesso às fontes impressas e manuscritas, e divulgação do conhecimento histórico. E mais uma vez o pioneirismo é dos norte-americanos(18).

Dos vários projectos merecem referência Digital Libraries Initiative, uma iniciativa conjunta de NSF, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), e National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ("Research on digital libraries" 1993), iniciada em 1993 sob a coordenação de Karen M. Drabenstott(22).
